Who is Daniel Arap MOI ?
Moi is Kenya's second President after independence and the longest serving President who served from 1978-2002 in succession of President Jomo Kenyatta after his demise. He was born on the 2nd of September 1924 to a poor peasant family in the Rift Valley. Mr. Moi studied in the Africa Inland Mission school before taking training as a teacher. He became a teacher at 21 and worked till 1955, he then engaged in politics and was elected parliamentarian of the Rift Valley. Mr. Moi was also part of the team which drew Kenya's first constitution in London. During his tenure in office, President Kenyatta groomed Moi to succeed him.

On the 1st of August, 1982, a coup was attempted by air-force personnel backed up by University students to oust President Moi but the military and police quickly pushed back. At this point, Moi had many rivals who worked tooth and nail to seize power. He then became very hard in his leadership. In 1991, he was pressurized from home and abroad to apply multi-partism. In 1992 and 1997, Moi emerged victorious in elections. He was dictatorial and autocratic in his rule, this brought about lots of human right accusations from Amnesty International and special investigations from the United Nations. In 2002, the constitution barred him from running for election. He then stepped down peacefully. In stepping down, he choose Uhuru Kenyatta to succeed him but Kenyatta lost. After leaving the political scene in 2002, Moi completely stayed out of politics.
Daniel Arap Moi died on the 4th of February, 2020 at the age of 95. Kenyans do not look at his legacy in the same way, they are divided as to whether their former President leaves a positive or a negative legacy. This sparks another thought, Nelson Mandela of South Africa died at 95 as well as Zimbabwe's late former president, Robert Gabriel Mugabe. The question is, Why do the prominent African leaders die at 95? what is it about this age 95? Do well to share your thoughts with us in the comment box
